About Jon Sladek
I was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on the southwest side in the heart of Czech Village — House District 78. As the youngest of four siblings, I grew up with a deep sense of service, responsibility, and community, thanks to my parents, Frank and Carolyn, both lifelong educators. From an early age, I learned that stewardship isn’t just about what we have today — it’s about taking care of it for future generations. That principle continues to guide me in everything I do.
In 2008, when I was 14, my family’s home was flooded in the devastating Cedar Rapids flood. That experience taught me resilience and the power of community, and it deepened my commitment to making this city better.
While in high school at Jefferson, I worked as a lifeguard and pool manager for the Cedar Rapids Parks Department. It was there that I learned firsthand how local government can impact the everyday lives of citizens. I graduated with honors and received the Service Award for completing over 900 hours of community service. Around this time, I also became an Eagle Scout with Troop 766, an achievement that instilled in me leadership, discipline, and a sense of responsibility to my community.
After high school, I attended Kirkwood Community College, where I earned both an EMT certification and an Associate of Arts degree. I then went on to study economics at the University of Iowa. During this time, I worked in various fields — including construction, hospitality, and eventually real estate — while also starting my own small businesses. I became a licensed REALTOR® because I believe in the power of homeownership, not just as a profession, but as a means to build generational stability. Every Iowan deserves a safe, secure place to call home.
Through my work in real estate, I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be for working families, small business owners, and renters to get by. I know the struggles of this community because I’m one of them. But I’ve also witnessed the strength of our people — how we come together in times of crisis and help one another with compassion and grit.
In addition to my work, I’m a big outdoors guy. I play rugby and serve on the board of the Iowa City Ducks. I’m involved in different conservation and service groups. You’ve likely seen me picking up trash on one of our many trails.
I’m running for the Iowa House because I believe in progress, transparency, and stewardship. Our district is full of smart, hardworking, and resilient people, but too often we’ve been overlooked or taken advantage of. We need leadership that is honest, accountable, and focused on the future.
I’m ready to fight for you.
